1977/09/17 -- The Affirmation of St. Louis
Note:
"This document has inspired thousands of Anglicans throughout the world and is a foundation stone of the Traditional Anglican Communion (TAC), Its doctrinal, moral and other theological principle are integral to the history and essential to the TAC, so much so that every Church or Province of the TAC disclaims any authority to amend or depart in any substantive manner from its fundamental declarations." -- Bishop Peter Wilkinson, OSG
The history of the almost 30 years now since the Affirmation was written has rendered parts -- especially in first section -- somewhat obsolete, though it be wished otherwise.
Perhaps the first section might be summed up by these words:
The Continuation of Anglicanism
We affirm that the Church of our fathers, sustained by the most Holy Trinity, lives yet, and that we, being moved by the Holy Spirit to walk only in that way, are determined to continue in the Catholic Faith, Apostolic Order, Orthodox Worship and Evangelical Witness of the traditional Anglican Church, doing all things necessary for the continuance of the same."
The remaining section is described under the overall title of "Fundamental Principles". There are sub-sections describing Doctrinal and Moral Principlesrinciples. The section on Constitutional Principles has been addressed in the Concordat of the TAC and National Church Constitutions.
It is essential that this document be read and understood by Continung Anglicans. Referring to the Fundamental Principles, The Affirmation states:
"In affirming these principles, we recognize that all Anglican statements of faith and liturgical formulae must be interpreted in accordance with them."
